Sheffield Archives houses many resources which will be of benefit to the family historian. For the beginner here are a number of sources which should be consulted when undertaking genealogical enquiries. The Library collects and preserves over 30,000 volumes of printed material relating to Sheffield and the surrounding area including; Telephone Directories 1960 onwards, Electoral Registers since 1843, Trade Directories from 1774, Newspapers since 1787 and much more. Staff are available to advise and help people who are unable to visit the library. Woodhouse was once part of the ancient Parish of Handsworth Woodhouse, the parish church being St Mary’s and part of the Catholic establishment until the reformation.
