General Register Office (GRO)
The General Register Office holds a central copy of all registrations for England and Wales including; Births, Stillbirths, Deaths, Marriages, Civil Partnerships, Adoptions.  See also A Guide to Understanding GRO Indexes.

Sheffield Archives
Sheffield Archives houses many resources which will be of benefit to the family historian. For the beginner here are a number of sources which should be consulted when undertaking genealogical enquiries. See descriptions for Bishops Transcripts, Cemetery Records, Census Returns, Directories, Electoral Rolls, GRO Index, I.G.I., Non-Conformist Records, Parish Registers and Probate Registers.

Sheffield Local Studies Library
The Library collects and preserves over 30,000 volumes of printed material relating to Sheffield and the surrounding area including; Telephone Directories 1960 onwards, Electoral Registers since 1843, Trade Directories from 1774, Newspapers since 1787 and much more. Staff are available to advise and help people who are unable to visit the library. They will try to answer enquiries received by post, telephone or E-mail, but unfortunately are unable to undertake lengthy research.

The Sheffield Registry Office
It provides all the Registration services laid down in the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1953, the Marriage Acts, 1949 to 1994 and the Civil Partnership Act 2004. All Births, Stillbirths and Deaths that occur within the City of Sheffield are registered at this office.

Sheffield City Council BMD's
Index of Births, Marriages and Deaths. This site will enable you to interrogate the index of births, deaths and marriages held at the Register Office Sheffield, so that you may request a replacement certificate. Please note, this is not a complete index - Searchable up to 5 years - indexing in progress.

Ecclesfield

Rotherham
Rotherham - a town and a borough situated in the county of South Yorkshire, England. Despite the demise of most of the collieries and the closure of many steelworks Rotherham is still an industrial town. The metropolitan borough of Rotherham includes suburban areas, rural villages, open countryside and the towns of Maltby and Wath-upon-Dearne.

Stocksbridge Town Council           << NEW
Stocksbridge is approximately 10 miles north of the City of Sheffield with excellent access to the M1 and Pennine routes. It lies on the edge of the Peak District National Park and is surrounded by spectacular countryside with wonderful views of the nearby reservoirs.  See also Bolsterstone.

Treeton
The South Yorkshire village of Treeton is close to Junction 33 of the M1, four miles from Rotherham and 5 miles from Sheffield. The Parish Church, described by Pevsner as a confusing building is one of only fifteen South Yorkshire churches mentioned in the Domesday Book. Inside you will find both family and local history including a Genealogy section.

Whiston is a suburb of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. Originally a small rural village between Sheffield and Rotherham, within the Saxon "Shire of Hallun" (Hallamshire), Whiston is now a suburb of Rotherham, close to its border with Sheffield.  See also Wikipedia's Whiston page.

Woodhouse
Woodhouse is a distinct village located to the South East of Sheffield. It has a long and rich history. Woodhouse was once part of the ancient Parish of Handsworth Woodhouse, the parish church being St Mary’s and part of the Catholic establishment until the reformation. The Handsworth and Woodhouse Urban District Council became a part of Sheffield in 1921, with some local perceived loss of influence and investment as a result.  See also Handsworth.

Registration Districts in West Yorkshire (Genuki)
