Mission Statement

The Sheffield Indexers' mission is to provide, via the Internet, accurate indexed transcriptions of genealogical records for access by all, free of charge.

About the Indexers

The original site was first conceived in 2001 by Elaine Pickard.  The intention was to index genealogical material, primarily specific to Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, especially Parish Registers and Burial information, into a simple to access format for people who who are interested in Sheffield Genealogy and have difficulty in obtaining the needed source material.

Access to the material is to be free of charge and that all transcriptions of records and management of the site would be from voluntary sources for the benefit of the genealogical community.

Projects

The Sheffield Indexers are pleased to offer the original online data for the 1841 Census Index that was made possible by a large group of volunteers in the Winter of 2004-2005. In addition we have 1841 Census Strays (Derbyshire).

Sheffield Parish Registers are being indexed and placed online where they can be searched under either Baptism or Marriage records.

Indexing is ongoing for City Road Cemetery Burial records.

School Admission Registers are well underway as are our new project Sheffield Institutions.  The Trade Directories continue to be updated to complete the existing databases. Please click on the links below to access the online database search pages.

Research

The searchable Message Forum is there for anyone to ask for help with their research, knowledgeable genealogists will, I am sure, try to help with your requests.  The forum also allows you to search for names, places and other miscellaneous inquiries of interest relating to Sheffield, Yorkshire, the UK and abroad.

An extensive list of Genealogy Links and Getting Started are also a very good place to start if you are looking for information on Sheffield, England or genealogy references in general.

Indexers Welcome

Sheffield Indexers are always welcoming new transcribers who are willing to volunteer their time to transcribe material to be uploaded onto the site where it can be appreciated by so many researchers.

If you are interested in joining our team for the current projects of Indexing Burial Records, Indexing Parish Records or Indexing School Records, please contact Elaine Pickard for details.  If you are also interested in transcribing other records please mention them in your email.

If you have any suggestions please contact me and we will certainly consider them.

For and on behalf of the Sheffield Indexers,

Elaine Pickard
